Text Box: Introduction
This leaflet carries an appeal to raise funds for the construction of a full service hospital in Gabiley district. The region currently has no hospital and has a minimal health care service available for a population of over 150,000 inhabitants. The new facility proposed in this leaflet will deliver high quality health care and treatment for the entire community.
About Gabiley district
Gabiley district is located in the western region of Somaliland and is compromised of 33 towns and villages with the population of over 150,000 people. The district is mainly agricultural area, with most of the population depending on subsistence farming.
Gabiley is part of a region that had been affected by civil war in Somalia. The destruction to the key services such as health facilities and roads has left for the inhabitants with little or no access to basic essential health services and treatments. Currently, there is no basic medical hospital serving this large population.
About the hospital
The aim of this project is to provide a basic and appropriate hospital for the population of Gabiley district. The hospital is expected to have medical & surgical ward, maternity ward, emergency surgical facilities, outpatient clinic, laboratory service and administrative office. The hospital will be the centre of treatment of the common diseases and illness that affects the lives of many people, specially, the poorest section of the community who at present do not have access to health care facilities.
The need for the hospital
The civil war in Somalia at the end of 1980s has completely destroyed the infrastructure of the public sector services including the health care system. The restoration of the services are beyond the local people’s capacity and indeed its’ current unrecognised government who has no resources to undertake such projects. This hospital is live saving project and will meet the long term and short term health care needs of the entire inhabitants of the district. This will also leave a lasting legacy as it will set up lasting health facilities.
On a daily basis the hospital will benefit about 100 to 150 people (outpatient & inpatient) of which about 80-90% will be from the poorest section of the community.
Benefits
The successful completion of the project will safe the lives of hundreds of people mainly women and children who are often the poor who have no access to health care facilities. The main benefits include:
Over 150,000 people inhabiting Gabiley district will have access for a local hospital services
Many lives will be saved as a result of this project
This will contribute to the reduction of avoidable death due to lack of basic health service such as infant and maternal mortality.
The hospital will contribute to the improvement of the health of the mothers and children in Gabiley district
People living in Gabiley area will save travel time and money
The living conditions of the people living in the area will be enhanced by the hospital
How much will the hospital cost
This is an ambitious plan, which is estimated to cost to complete approximately $450,000.  This will complete the construction phase and will also equip the hospital to a reasonable high standard.
